Adventures in Guatemala

If you are looking for a Hispanic country to visit on your next travel adventure, and you like exploring old cultures and traditions in a modern setting, Guatemala is a good choice.

Guatemala originates from Maya (Mesoamerican) civilization, and this influence resonates even up until today. The country is also known for its abundant and diverse flora and fauna, and contributes to Mesoamerica’s reputation as a biodiversity hotspot.

What to do in Guatemala? Here are some ideas.

1.     Go boating across Lago de Atitlan. Lago de Atitlan is known as one of the world’s most beautiful lakes. It is also the deepest lake in Central America, and its lake basin is volcanic in origin after being formed in an eruption 84,000 years ago. According to GeckosAdventure.com, Atitlan is a “breathtaking beauty.” For those who dare, there are cliffs near San Marcos for extreme jumping activities.

2.     Shop at the Chichicastenango market. Dubbed “Chichi” for short, this market is the brightest and most vibrant native market in Central America, according to Touropia.com. Chichi houses a wide array of goods, from fabrics, textiles and clothings to wood crafts, pottery and even fireworks. It is situated two to three hours away from Guatemala City, and is also noted for hosting festivals and feasts.

3.     Stand on top of a Mayan temple. Remnants of Mayan civilization remain in Guatemala, and most of them have been restored for modern appreciation and learning. Set against a breathtaking backdrop, climbing the giant pyramid ruins in Tikal is like taking a step back in time. Whether or not you are fond of ancient history, Tikal will certainly make you want to learn more about the history and culture of earlier Mayan civilizations.

4.     Enjoy chocolate at Cafe La Luna. Located at Quetzaltenango, this place is a go-to for good ol’ made-from-scratch chocolate. According to the Lonely Planet, their chocolate cappuccino, topped with fresh whipped cream, is “mind-blowing.”

5.     Get lost in Antigua. Gadling.com recommendsvisiting Antigua’s colonial architecture, like the Catedral de Santiago, which exudes old world charm. Cobblestone streets, a plaza lined with trees and arches—Antigua is the ideal place for the romantic traveller.
